The School of Engineering Design and Innovation (EDI) ... housed in the EDI Building ... is comprised of multiple programs that span the College of Engineering, from cornerstone to capstone. Professional programs such as the Engineering Leadership Development minor and the Engineering Entrepreneurship minor often give out student awards to recognize graduates and high-achieving teams. Similarly, the Learning Factory, which supports client-sponsored projects (such as this project), provides awards to capstone teams that demonstrate outstanding performance. In these cases, prior students have highly coveted these awards, which have included a Nittany Lion mounted to a Plaque as well as a "mini" Nittany Lion shrine. Prior winners appreciate the Penn State Pride these awards demonstrate when displaying them at their job after graduation. However, the cost of these awards has become extremely prohibited, ranging from $60-$100 per award with some programs needing over 100 awards per year. The goal of this project is to create a custom award that may be manufactured using the Learning Factory facilities. A combination of design elegance while balancing simplicity and ease of manufacturing is desired. The total cost of the award must be a fraction of the cost of current awards. A combination of award styles may also be an option for differentiating the award's purpose. Of course, the award must scream Penn State Pride, and be something that future Penn Staters will highly covet. The team will be responsible for designing the award, soliciting stakeholder feedback, developing appropriate tooling for award creation, and fully documenting the manufacturing process for the award. Success will be measured by the successful manufacture of an award by a student not involved on the design team.
