Crane Clean Energy Center (CrCEC; formerly TMI-1) seeks to use F/D for waste processing. b. Current system permits resin/chemicals/oils to potentially enter waste stream and foul future system. c. Look into solutions to address this input. i. CrCEC is a single-unit pressurized water reactor (PWR) that historically used ‘evaporators’ to handle raw radioactive wastes from the radiologically-controlled areas of the plant. Evaporators are being replaced with a ‘filter-demineralizer’ (F/D) method of liquid radioactive waste processing. F/D cannot tolerate oils and greases in the input as this will lead to premature failure or blinding of filter media as well as coating of resin media which will degrade performance, requiring more-frequent replacement. ii. Students are encouraged to find solutions that prevent input at any point upstream of the F/D system. iii. Solutions should be detailed for teams to present their findings for challenge by Engineering and other members of the Staff. iv. Students are expected to perform walkdowns of the CrCEC at least three times (i.e., onsite visits with staff).
