Large scale industrial plants typically require key pieces of equipment to have an emergency power system in the event of a power outage to prevent equipment damage. Emergency power systems come at a very high cost for design, supply and installation of the equipment. Some of these systems may be able to utilize an alternative approach that capitalizes on the advancement of electric vehicle technology. In particular, the kiln requires an inching drive to be able to rotate at low speeds in the event of a power outage to avoid thermal damage. Electric vehicles have high torque motors and high-capacity batteries that could function similar to a kiln drive. The project would entail designing a system that could adapt an electric vehicle for this purpose as an electric vehicle would represent a fully engineered product solution with minimal installation and operating costs.
