FPGA Data Bus for Real Time Robotic Communications

Student team will design and implement a simple message packet switching network on an FPGA chip for deterministic data communication among IoT sensors and a central controller in a robot. An inexpensive robot consists of multiple sensors and a central processing unit responsible for decision making and control algorithms. Sensor data will be transmitted through the FPGA data bus to the central processor, where it will be analyzed and used to generate commands for the robot. The project will focus on reducing communication latency, limiting timing variation, prioritizing critical sensor data messages, and maintaining predictable performance during periods of high data traffic. Possible sensors may include distance, position, force, proximity, light, color, or safety sensors. The final demonstration should show how sensor information is received, processed, and used to control the robot system through the FPGA data bus. An FPGA development board Kria KV250 board will be provided, which will be integrated into an inexpensive robo-car with arm to demonstrate both fast real-time data communication and robotic operations.
